Downtown Athens Historic District

Downtown Athens Historic District is a charming area in Athens, Georgia, known for its historic architecture, locally owned businesses, and vibrant cultural scene. Established in the early 19th century, the district encompasses several blocks of downtown Athens and features over 60 contributing buildings that date back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. The district includes notable landmarks such as the Morton Theatre, the oldest surviving vaudeville theatre in the southeastern United States and the Athens Welcome Center, housed in a restored 1820s-era church.

Visitors can take a stroll down the bustling streets of the district, lined with a variety of boutiques, galleries, restaurants, and bars, many of which are housed in historic buildings. The district is also home to several annual events, including the AthFest Music and Arts Festival, which showcases local musicians and artists, and the Twilight Criterium, a high-speed bicycle race through the streets of downtown Athens.
