Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site

Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site contains a pre-Columbian Native American metropolis near the Mississippi River. At the time, it was a city inhabited from 700 to 1400, occupying 4,000 acres and counting the population from ten to twenty thousand people in the year 1100. The historic site has preserved important colonial and Federal-era buildings which are included in the National Register of Historic Places.
