Bugis

Bugis Street is Singapore's most recognizable district. Before WWII, it was a popular destination for Japanese pleasure workers . From the 1950s until the 1980s, the area became famous across the world for its nightly gatherings of trans women and drag queens, who could safely be themselves and even find jobs here. This period was immortalized in the film ‘Bugis Street’ (1995). Today, the street is densely packed with temples, galleries, museums, and shopping opportunities, which attract crowds of tourists and locals alike.
